Case Study: Cadbury College

Creating an enrichment policy and engaging students

ConnectFutures supported Cadbury College with creating an enrichment policy, student buy in to the enrichment guidelines and inclusion across multi faith societies. Dr Laura Zahra McDonald of ConnectFutures supported Amie Banford with understanding needs of college with regards to student societies, inclusion and student-led enrichment, with a focus on student relations and college policies.

Part of the consultation included Laura observing sessions, holding a student enrichment forum and staff training sessions. The results were a consultation split over 2 days; summary report with suggestions; 2 student capacity building sessions delivered, with materials to keep and continue work on by students and the college. This enabled Amie Banford to create an action plan for senior management to implement. The main results were growth in awareness and guidance on decision making around the multi-faith prayer room accessible to all faiths and having enrichment groups follow the enrichment guidelines.

Results obtained by Cadbury College found they were more knowledge across the organisation on the formation and structure of prayer rooms in British educational institutions.  Management felt more empowered to balance inclusivity with practicality within college.

“Dr Laura Zahra McDonald of ConnectFutures was amazing. She is knowledgeable in all areas of faith including prayer rooms, inclusivity and equality across faith societies. Laura worked really well with the students to understand the diversity of the college enrichment offer and listen to the concerns and management issues presented by staff. Laura worked closely with both staff and students to create a harmonious balance that met college needs whilst ensured the students were supported and being enriched. The most valuable lesson from Laura was understanding the local context for our learners and the impact it has on them and how enrichment and societies supports our learners to have a safe place to explore their religious beliefs and that is a key thing a college in Birmingham should be offering.”
